How to Get Rid of Panic Attacks

You have an upset stomach; you take antacids to rid you of the pain. You have a headache; you take ibuprofen or aspirin to control the pain. Your heart is racing as you finished your aerobic exercise. You feel short of breath after climbing up 10 flights of stairs. You feel tingly and nervous and sweaty – are you in love? The thing is, any of these symptoms could mean anything. However, put them all together and throw in sensations of intense fear and doom, then there’s a possibility that you are experiencing a panic attack. If such is the case, the first thing you would want to do is find out how to get rid of panic attacks.

There is psychotherapy, medications, and some experts say, a change in lifestyle. These options work but what if the panic attack is actually happening?  Is there anything you can do? Here are some of the things that you can do that will help you get rid of panic attacks:

Get Active

If you’re one big coach potato, do something about it. Get active! Do some exercises or any type of sports to get you on a different kind of adrenalin pattern.  A bout of a panic attack makes your heart palpitate and blood rush in your head. An attack is all about a release of adrenalin for a “fight or flight” mode. A panic attack is a physiological thing at the onset. Exercising could actually “burn” the excess adrenalin. So once it hits, go for a focused quick walk, jump in place, wiggle jiggle – whatever it is you do, burn energy!

Take a Breath

Hyperventilating is taking short-shallow breaths. At the onset of a panic attack, you hyperventilate and gasp. Not good. You have to remember to take slow deep breaths. Expand your chest. Breathe using your diaphragm – just like the way singers do it. Breathe in and out real slow. When done properly, being aware of and controlling your breath can help you get rid of panic attacks.

Get a Massage

The attacks tense up your muscles especially in the neck, throat, shoulders and diaphragm areas. The added stress from your tensed-up muscles will add more pressure on you. If you can, massage the affected areas to ease up on tension. If there’s someone with you, let him or her massage the back of your neck one side at a time. Remember to take deep slow breaths.

Stay Put and dare the attack

During a panic attack your body switches to the “flight or fight” mode, well, don’t! That is, don’t punch anyone within arm’s-length (kidding!)  and don’t run as if hell hounds are after you. The best thing to do is for you to stay put and get a hold of yourself. Running from the place where the attack takes place will only worsen things. Remind yourself that no matter what, the attack will not harm you. And if you can dare and ‘tell’ the attack “Come on, I am not afraid of you,” you will be surprised to find out that you have just managed to stop the attack in its tracks. How?  By depriving it from its most important ingredient – fear!

A Panic Attack – Knowing What to Expect From It

Have you ever seen someone have a panic attack or have you had one yourself?  If you have, you know firsthand the fear that accompanies them. If these attacks continue they can have a crippling affect on the person´s life. This is what you should expect from a panic attack:

 It will involve these symptoms

There are two types of symptoms that will affect you when you have a panic attack:  physical sensations and frightening thoughts. You can expect to experience any combination of these symptoms in a panic attack.

•    The physical sensations you should expect from a panic attack are heart palpitations or pounding heart, dizziness, profuse sweating, sensations of shortness of breath or smothering, trembling or shaking, a feeling of choking, chest pain or discomfort, unsteadiness, nausea or abdominal distress, lightheadedness or faintness, chills or hot flashes, feelings of unreality or of being detached from oneself, and numbness or tingling sensations.

•    Frightening thoughts such as fear of losing control or losing your mind, being afraid you´re dying, fear that it is a serious medical problem, or fear that you are having a heart attack or stroke are often part of a panic attack.

 It will scare you to death

The scariest thing you should expect from a panic attack is that it hits all of a sudden and, often, with no apparent reason. You suddenly feel that you are in great danger and all you want to do is run in order to get away from it. You may feel that you are dying or going crazy. Anyone who has experienced a panic attack will tell you that it is a terrifying experience.

 It will last an eternity

No matter how long the panic attack actually lasts, you will feel like it lasts an eternity.  Most attacks reach their height in approximately 10 minutes and are over within 20 minutes. There are, however, instances where panic attacks have lasted up to an hour.

 It will strike again

The scariest thing you should expect from a panic attack is that the majority of the people who experience them will have another one. They will happen when you least expect them to, however with proper therapy and/or the application of various relaxation techniques, a person can learn to control these attacks. The number of attacks a person will experience depends a lot on how they learn to handle their fears.

 It will damage your life if not stopped

A panic attack, or recurring panic attacks, scary as they are, will never harm you – no matter how often they occur. However, if not treated, they may turn into a phobia. Once a phobia takes control of your life you may find yourself afraid of open, crowded, places, and even begin to avoid social gatherings.

You may have heard the phrase “panic attack” or “panic disorder” before. But you may be left wondering: What is a panic attack? If you’ve experienced one of these attacks or think you may be experiencing them, you know how frightening they can be. Other people may be worried for you at first then become frustrated and blame you for the condition. Once you understand panic attacks better you can help others learn what is happening to you.

Learning First Hand “What is a Panic Attack?

One long-term sufferer of panic attacks described her first attack as “an intense feeling that I was about to die.” She recalled sitting in a darkened movie theater surrounded by her family and suddenly feeling a tightening in her chest that she believed was a sign of a heart attack. She couldn’t breathe. As soon as the movie ended, she had her family take her to the emergency room where she was diagnosed as being perfectly fine.

This is not an unusual story for people who suffer from panic attacks. The attacks bring on a series of physical sensations – often similar to those described for a heart attack – but which are triggered by the body’s own flight or fight response system.

Usually, the system responds to fearful situations but in the case of a panic attack, the trigger is usually nothing frightening at all and might be something as simple as the fear of having another attack.

So what is a panic attack? The same type of reaction you might have to have life threatening situation but in a situation that could be as harmless as watching a movie, having dinner at a restaurant, or sleeping.

The APA Diagnosis

According to the American Psychological Association (APA), the answer to the question “What is a panic attack?” includes three criteria besides the physical symptoms:

•    The attack must happen suddenly
•    The physical response should be out of proportion to the actual situation
•    The attack should only lasts a few minutes (fear of having more attacks can actually trigger additional, separate attacks within a short time span)

As many as 4 million people in the United States may have suffered from at least one or two panic attacks in their life. For those who suffer from repeat or frequent panic attacks, the condition is elevated to panic disorder. People who have panic disorder and who do not receive proper treatment can continue having worsening panic attacks and can even develop full-blown social phobias.

Taking the Right Steps

If you think you have had or are having a panic attack, your first stop should be your doctor. The symptoms of these attacks are similar to those of serious health problems that might require immediate medical attention. You need to rule that out before deciding you’re only having a panic attack.

Once you’ve ruled out health problems as the cause for your condition, you may need to speak to a mental health professional about the attacks so you begin receiving appropriate treatment. They can also help you further understand what is a panic attack.

Do We Really Create Our Panic Attacks?

“Not long from now you will realize that it is you who brings about your own panic attacks,” he said to me.
”Why on earth would I need to create my own attacks?” I wondered. But while learning about the nature of Anxiety and Panic Attacks, at some point in my treatment, the sobering, somewhat shocking, truth was starring me straight in my face. And disagreeable as it may be to assimilate, I could now clearly see: I Was causing my own attacks.
Panic attacks manifest as a result of our distorted thinking, in spite of the fact that to us they seem like they appear out of the blue. When we gain insight to the nature of the attacks it becomes obvious that attack itself is in fact a normal emotional knee jerk to a torrent of physical symptoms, caused by anxiety. And although those physical sensations are by no means perilous, it is our deep belief and conviction to the contrary that speeds up and brings about the attacks.
Anxiety produces different bodily discomforts, all of which are associated with the fight and flight response:
• Racing heart
• Feeling weak, faint or light headed
• Tingling or numbness in the hands and fingers
• perspiring or having chills
• Chest pains
• Breathing difficulties and others

None of these symptoms is ever dangerous when felt by a person prone  to panic attacks:  Well documented is the fact that those who suffer from panic attacks do not get heart attacks, faint, lose control, suffocate, or go  crazy as a result of their panic attacks. Never!
Confusing what would otherwise be harmless symptoms to be life threatening is where the problem lies:
The only difference between a person who is not prone to panic attacks and the person who is,  is that the first, when experiencing any of the anxiety symptoms described above, knows that  these are only temporary physical sensations that will not cause him or her any harm, while the latter  perceives the physical sensations to be life threatening. Consequently the first will get over them and move on, the second will panic.
