Later, after the attack, I often feel guilty. Is this normal? Is it a realisation that my anxiety is a fault?

Hi there
Anxiety is a very powerful thing and i am speaking first hand as i have suffered with acute anxiety for two years. I also suffer guilt shortly after attacks and i believe it is due to the fact we have no control over this terrible disposition and feel helpless, and unnecessarily guilty that we have no control of the attack. It is a horrible pain to endure without the guilt, however another explanation is that it is very common for anxiety sufferers to also have symptoms of depression of which guilt is a common symptom of. Either way you don't have to endure this pain and there are many excellent anti -anxiety medications available to reduce these symptoms. So go along to your doctor and discuss some symptom relieving medications. good luck, and i hope your symptoms reduce with time

if you see a counselor for this I would discuss this over with them, if not, try going inward and see what is going on to have such an attack and why the guilt remains after, this is self discovery on your part

I guess it depends on the extent of the guilt. It would seem natural to feel guilty, though if the guilt is overbearing or ongoing, I'd suggest you talk to a counsellor about this. If that option isn't available to you, you can try self-diagnose what is provoking the anxiety attacks to try prevent them, and try determine what may be making you feel guilty so you can rationalise why such guilt is unnecessary or such.

It is because the feeling of losing control is powerful. When you are not in control of your feelings and can't control them, it's normal to feel guilty. Don't you take meds for these attacks? If not, maybe you should.

Yes, this is normal. One reason why this is real is because after an anxiety attack I tend to question my own self worth and feel guilty for doing it. Though it can be stopped if you take the situation into perspective and try to understand why you have had the attack and further try to discover the cause of the guilt following afterwards. Which will overall make you fell more confident and less guilty about the experience in general.

It is not a fault it is something you have no control over.. that is why you need treatment for anxiety attacks.. there is no reason to feel any guilt … I hope you are getting treatment for this and mention that guilt feeling to your doctor or councellor.. or psychiatrist.. whomever you see.. Anxiety is very common and so is depression.. you are really not alone… and have no need to feel guilty… you are the person who suffers in all this remember… so you are the only person who really gets hurt by the anxiety attack…. you need to tell him how you feel…. and I hope you get medication or therapy for this….
