ok well im still not sure if this is actually what is happening to me but im starting to think it might be….. anyways it seems that i may be occasionally suffering from panic attacks… mine seem to happen for no apparent reason…. but anyways my question is how do you stop them…. im guessing that breathing in and out slowly and stuff like that helps but is there anything else….. any help would be appreciated…. thank you

Panic attacks are not something to be taken lightly, and they DON’T go away when you say "Stop!" That’s the dumbest advice I ever heard. You need to see a doctor about it. I attempted suicide because my panic was so severe.

People who have not been through true panic should not be giving advice. I’m on one milligram of Klonopin a day and I feel normal again.

Good luck. Don’t pay attention to the idiots who think it’s "all in your head." That’s pure bullshit.

    Panic Attacks Are Common
When I first became certified as a Hypnotherapist in 1990, I was surprised by the number of people who came to me with anxiety and panic attacks. Many people experience panic attacks frequently and live their lives avoiding situations that frighten them, in many cases irrationally. This simple technique for ending a panic attack was part of my hypnotherapy training and has been used successfully by many of my clients since then. Using the four easy steps below, you can learn to end a panic attack in as little as three minutes.

    What Is A Panic Attack?
A panic attack is a condition of adrenaline being released into your bloodstream. A message of fear sends a signal to the adrenal glands that there is an emergency.

The adrenal glands are pea-sized organs that sit on top of your kidneys. They are filled with adrenaline that, when released into your body, gives you heightened abilities to respond to emergency situations. This emergency response causes physical symptoms that many people misinterpret as a heart attack or other serious physical conditions. Misinterpreting these symptoms can cause the fear response to continue.

    Here’s How It Works
Adrenaline causes the heart to pump extra blood. This extra blood gets pumped into your major muscles to increase your ability to run fast and to increase the strength in your arms. Extra blood also goes into your brain to give you heightened abilities to respond to the emergency.

It takes three minutes from the time that your brain sends the emergency signal until your body is fully adrenalated with extra blood in your large arm and leg muscles and in your brain. In that three minute period you experience your heart pumping hard and extra blood flowing throughout your body. As long as your adrenal glands keep getting an emergency message, they continue to produce and release additional adrenaline. Once your brain stops signaling an emergency, your adrenal glands hold the adrenaline instead of releasing it.

It Only Takes Three Minutes To Stop A Panic Attack
It takes three minutes for your adrenal glands to fill your body with the adrenaline response. It also only takes three minutes for your body to stop the adrenaline reaction. If you stop a panic attack as soon as it starts, the reaction only has to last for three minutes.

    It’s Very Simple
Stopping a panic attack is very simple. All you have to do is stop the emergency message from being sent to your adrenal glands. Learn these four simple steps and your panic attack will only last for three minutes. Once you understand how this works, you never have to have a panic attack again.

    Learn These Four Simple Steps
If panic attacks have been a recurring problem, write the four basic steps on a little card, with a list of sample Coping Statements on the back. Mark the card with bright stripes to make it easy to find in your wallet, and keep it with you everywhere you go until you memorize the steps and know them thoroughly. Study these steps and learn them in advance. If you have a panic attack, get out your card immediately and follow it exactly. Once you learn these steps you won’t need the card.

    Full Resolution
If you experience panic attacks more often than occasionally I strongly suggest that you work with a practitioner to resolve the cause of your anxiety. You owe it to yourself to be free of anxiety. Permanently resolving issues of anxiety is one of my areas of specialty.

    The Four Steps:
    Relax.
    Stop Negative Thinking.
    Use Coping Statements.
    Accept Your Feelings.
    Here’s How:
    Step 1. Relax.
Relax by taking slow, deep, complete breaths. Calm yourself by remembering that you are only having a panic attack and that nothing more serious is happening to you. Continue to take slow, deep, complete breaths. Slow, deep, complete breaths will relax your body, which is the first step to reversing the release of adrenaline.

    Step 2. Stop Negative Thinking.
Stop negative thinking by shouting the word "STOP!!!" really loud inside your head. By shouting the word "STOP" you are interrupting the emergency message that your brain is sending to your adrenal glands. Often people having a panic attack get into an endless loop repeating the same catastrophic thoughts over and over in their head. Interrupting this endless loop gives you the opportunity to replace the scary message with a calming one.

    Step 3. Use Coping Statements.
A coping statement is a positive statement that is at least as strong as the catastrophic statement that you have been scaring yourself with. Replace the negative thought with a positive one. Choose a statement that addresses the negative thought.

For example, if you think that you are having a heart attack (a common fear during a panic attack) then you might be saying something in your head like, "Oh my God, I’m having a heart attack" or, "I’m gonna die, oh my God, I’m gonna die!" After you shout the word "STOP!" immediately replace the f

i have major anxiety problems / stress / eating disorders.
i get panic attacks all the time, sometimes for no reason.
what you need to do is close your eyes, and block everything around you out, dont listen to anything but your own breathing- in and out slowly. if you think of something that makes you so happy, or a saying or a song lyrics and just tell them to yourself that helps too.

I suffer from anxiety disorder and get them on a regular basis. Mostly when Im trying to sleep.

My mind races at a million miles a second. And my heart beats really hard I sweat heaps and get butterflies in my stomach (but not good ones).
I go and see a councilor and it really helps. You can also by natural products to spray on your tongue that calm you down.
Also you might want to see a councilor because you may have an anxiety disorder. Which is’nt pleasant to live with.

    good luck.

panic attacks took over my life for about 3 years so i am very familiar with them. are you sure that nothing triggers them? are you nervous, do you worry about certain things, do certain places/situations make you anxious and do you dread them? are you unhappy and unconfident with yourself?
yes breathing in slowly does help, but you should relax and lay down as soon as you feel it coming on. what exactly happens to you when you feel like you’re having a "panic attack"? i got spotty vision and a tingly sensation, and my throat burned like someone was choking me. i also couldnt walk about 30 seconds into it, and once i fell down my stairs, so thats why i suggest laying down.
what helps the most though is having someone you love/care about there with you to calm you down. just hold them or have them hold you, or just to hold your hand. it sucks so badly having to go through something like that alone.

Remind yourself that you are ok that this just an overload of adrenaline that has misfired. Find a calm place to sit down. Breathe slowly from your belly. Recall a pleasant time or scene. Know it’s going to pass and you are going to be fine. Cut back on caffeine, reduce exposure to the stressors in you life, get more restful sleep.

What I do when I get a panic attack is, I tell myself its only panic attack and forget it then I go for a walk or play soccer with my dog. If I don’t feel like doing that, I go outside and get fresh air, I sit there until I’m normal again. If its night I’ll go lay down. Try calling a nurse advice line when that happens or a crisis line, like the 9 line, they will talk to you. Just explain to them your having a panic attack and after awhile talking to them it will go away, talking on the phone distracts you and after awhile you’ll forget it. 1800-999-9999. Or call a friend. Remember you can’t die from a panic attack. It can’t do anything to you. Your in control not the panic attack.

I have attended a program which comes in a book called Change Ways. It’s purpose is to change our way of thinking. We tend to deal with situations differently…some go in denial, some work, some shutdown, and others freak out.

I saw a hypnotist who had me doing the breathing but added the imagery of a cat sitting on a fence licking her paw and stroking her ears. Down below is a pack of wild dogs barking, yelping and jumping up at the cat; however, you know how cats are? "Whah? Whatever." and it continues to groom itself driving the dogs crazy. WE ARE THE CAT.

Another, imagery item is to visualize a STOP sign. See the red sign. See the word stop. Each time you find yourself increasing in breathing, sweating, shaking, etc….continue breathing and close your eyes. See the stop sign. It works really well at bedtime or if you wake up in a panic attack.

Try to rationaize. If it isn’t going to hurt you, then you need to rationalize it over and over. Everyone rides the elevator everyday. It opens, it shuts, it moves up, it moves down, it jolts when it arrives at the floor. It’s okay, I’m okay.

When dealing with really big issues (financial for example), tell yourself, I can’t deal with this right now, not hear where I am. I need to put these feelings and thoughts in a box in my head. Once I can say to myself, okay, that worked. It’s in the box. I can now function. When I’m safe at home, then I’ll open the box and deal with the flood of emotions, feelings, and fears.

    Take Care.
