How do I get help for Agoraphobia if I can't leave the house?

I've suffered from Agoraphobia since I was a child. Up until recently it was manageable with a range of distraction techniques, but I was taken ill, and after 2 months of complete bedrest I am now completely unable to face the outside world. I am normally a level headed person, but I have found myself experiencing anxiety attacks, palpitations, uncontrollable shaking and dizzy spells, when only thinking about going outside. I know I need to see a GP, but I just can't face leaving the house, what can I do??

Call a psychologist to come to you, you may need anti-anxiety medicine to help you go outside until some behavioral therapy will help you.

Call your local crisis line. They can help you. There are people who can come to your house. You won't get full treatment from them but they can help you get treatment.

One should be able to come to you, and work with you in steps to get you out of the house. Good luck, and I hope you feel better soon!

First of all, don't get caught up on the idea of something being wrong with you. I've worked with mentally ill people for almost 5 years now, and although Agoraphobia is not a mental disease per se- (like schizophrenia, etc) it is important to realize that your fears and feelings come from a real place, and are mental in nature. And it's okay! Lots of people are afflicted with Agoraphobia, and the process of coming out into the world is a process that for some takes days, weeks, months, sometimes even years. Don't get discouraged if it takes you a bit longer than you had hoped for. Distraction techniques work only to a point. And while I empathize with you suffering from this for years, I must also reassure you that you have the power to overcome this.
There are various online help groups, support groups- yahoo, msn, etc. Many different online communities can offer help, but it's important to get in touch with a Psychiatric professional who can help you. Any good psych will be willing to come to you, instead of forcing you to come to them. You may want to talk to the professionals at your local hospital and ask who they refer people to, just to get an idea of what your options are. Don't hesitate to ask for help! Looks like you're wanting to change, which is the most important thing for your success. I wish you the best of luck, and look forward to hearing how you do!

One of the best ways I know to help you is called EasyCalm.http://bit.ly/121gnR
It is an online therapy, using videos.
The approach is gentle and gradual. It has helped me a lot.
