I only have panic attacks in certain social situations which is very few per year (thank God); My dr prescibed .5 and told me to take it only when i fill a panic attack coming on. I have a social event coming up that i might have to take the med for..

BTW: I know that everyone reacts differently to medication. I really want to hear you experience, tips, ect.. anything will be helpful..

I don’t take Klonopin, but Ativan. I’m sure they are similar. If you typically get high anxiety and panic attacks before a social event, you can take it as soon as you feel anxiety, not wait for it to escalate into an attack. Usually I don’t know how long mine take to work because they sneak up on you. It will be a little later and I’ll realize I feel better. But they begin to work pretty quickly, within a few minutes.

Im not sure if what Im feeling is a true panic attack. What does your panic attacks feel like? What are your symptoms?

I have anxiety and last summer my anixety got really bad, panic attacks were something I experienced weekly, even daily sometimes.

I always started off with my stomach feeling sick and getting really hot and sweating, then I’d get dizzy and my heart would start racing, then I felt like I couldn’t breathe. Sometimes I’d even dry heave or throw up. It always scared me, the first time I had one, I even thought I was dying.

I still do get panic attacks but I’ve learned to detect them before they get bad and I calm myself down.

I am unable to remove myself from a situation that will probably cause me to have a panic attack, and I can’t take any drugs because my parents do not know that I get panic attacks.

It would be a good idea to let your parents know you are having problems. If your parents will not understand, talk to the guidance counselor at your school. Try to do some relaxation techniques before your anxiety has a chance to grow. I hope you will be able to find ways to calm yourself like deep breathing and muscle relaxation. Good Luck.

mine started after smoking weed and stuck at a red light at a main intersection the next day. and now im still suffering from it thanks to anxiety. so what started yalls first panic attack? and were was it at?

Negative emotions (like sadness, stress, anger, etc.) causes your Serotonin production to be low; when your Serotonin level is low, you are more prone to getting Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Depression, etc.

Medication like Antidepressants (SSRI – Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) helps to boost Serotonin level.
But there are natural ways to do it without medication. There’s this strange herb called "St John’s Wort" – it is said to be more effective than Prozac. No, it is not for mild depression only and ignore those sayings. In fact, it does help anxiety and panic-attacks as St John’s Wort works like prozac. Other natural ways will be exercise, diet, more exposure to light, etc.

The problem is that, even if your Serotonin is balanced… you have that "learned behavior" in your mind. You need to break that initial cycle to destroy that learned behavior – Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) does this. A technique that you can use without CBT will be Distraction… There are several other techniques to help cope them!
Ok, to use Distraction: Firstly, try to….

My friend has recently been evaluated medically and prescribed Xanax for panic attacks that they get. I feel helpless every time they have an attack. Is there anything I can do besides get them a glass of water to take their pill? Please HELP!
My friend is male if that helps?

Just help them get through it, provide comfort, and attempt to calm them down. I used to talk my ex out of them, she would start to have one, then calmly I would ask her to explain why she was in a panic. Eventually it got to the point where once she started to have one, she would call if i wasnt around to tell me what was happening and she would talk smoothly and calmly untill the anxiety went away. She was bi-polar, so it was easier to tell when she might have one, but as i said, calmly and rationaly offer a shoulder, and an ear, and walk them out of it.

How do I know if I am having a panic attack?

How do I know if I am having a panic attack? On May 30 of this year I was at the mall. My first experience is that I feel dizzy. Then I start to feel like I can’t move my body. My body doesn’t feel relaxed. Than make stomach gets upset and I feel sick to my stomach. The spells comes twice a week for 20 to 30 minutes. After 30 minutes than I feel like myself. After I have theses spells I feel really sleepy and feel like I am on edge. I have made and appointment with my doctor for next thursday. Does anybody think that I am having a panic attack? Or does anybody think that I have a medical problem? Is there any medication that I can take for panic attack? Are there any self help groups out there? I live in the south jersey area.

The symptoms you’ve described could be panic attacks and they can be caused by any number of things including hypoglycemia, so a trip to your doctor is warranted.

I have (had) panic attacks, but no more. My last one was caused by steroid psychosis, which was treated with/by short term Ativan, which I keep for emergencies, and obviously reducing the steroids. Basically, a panic attack feels like you are terrified, but can’t find a good reason to be afraid and is accompanied by rapid heartbeat and shallow rapid breathing. There are many treatments which vary from medication to techniques with are designed to slow down your breathing and your heart rate.

The problem with panic attacks is that they’re basically caused by a subconscious assault on a conscious mind, which means that a thought which brings on panic happens so fast that a panic attack seems to "hit" you without any rhyme or reason. I personally have dealt with them by a combination of medication (Cyproheptadine) and therapy. Good luck.

I have a Maths Exam tomorrow and I suffer from Panic Attacks in really quiet situations, it happens in assembly so I avoid it and it happens in lessons sometimes so I talk to people. But this is going to be a 1 hour and 30 minute exam, I’m going to be having one Panic Attack after another. I’m so frightened. When I get these Panic Attacks, I try to breath but I just can’t reach the top of my breath. Also I try to drink water but I just cannot swallow it. Please help! I’m so worried! :(

Calm down, first of all. Easier said than done, but try to. I know this because I suffer from panic attacks too. If you start feeling nervous or hot all over (could be panic attack warnings) remember who you are, and that YOU are in control of the situation. It is all in your mind ____. (Whatever your name is.) Breathe deeply and evenly, and you can try talking to God (If you believe in Him.) You can bring along a good luck charm if it helps. One of the most important things is, if WORST comes to worst, where you literally couldn’t stay in the room for another second, run out. They can’t physically restrain you. You are better than that though, but I know for me I take comfort in knowing that during tests. Chamomile tea is known for it’s calming effects, so you might want to think about drinking some before the test. Good luck.

If you were to go to the ER while having a panic attack, what would they do?

They check your vitals, and give you tests that rack up bills and then tell you it was only a panic attack. If it is not one they hopefully diagnose you with something else. Sometimes they give you a referral for psychologist’s office. They may also think you are just trying to get some drugs like valium or zanax and will write that in your file.
