I checked myself into the ER because of a severe panic attack compounded by lack of sleep and some delusional thinking. I continued having a panic attack and delusions in the ER so they gave me a single Haldol injection. I experienced ataxia, sweating, increased sex drive, etc. Does anyone know the different types of Haldol injections?

Haldol blocks your dopamine, the chemical in the brain responsible for movement and pleasure. Don’t check yourself into the ER, they will just inject you with Haldol, the cheapest and nastiest antipsychotic drug. If it was an intramuscular injection, it can last for up to a month, if it was an intravenous injection, then it shouldn’t last for more than 3-6 hours. I’m guessing you were given an intramuscular injection, they usually don’t give you an intravenous injection, unless you’re a violent psychotic person on crystal meth or with schizophrenia. Google this drug, it’s nasty. Weight gain, diabetes, an irreversible movement disorder called tardive dyskinesia, are all side effects. The mental health system uses drugs like Haldol to shut people down, for the sake of society, not for the sake of the patient. They could have easily given you an intravenous injection of a benzodiazepine, you definitely didn’t need to be shut down with a powerful antipsychotic drug. Well, you’ve learn something new for next time.

I have a panic attack after I eat certain foods containing large amounts of sodium, sugar, caffeine, and chocolate . I have been to the cardiologist several times and they could find nothing wrong with me. For the mean time I have put myself on a special diet that will help reduce an panic attack. I eat lots of fruits, veggies, meat, and more organic foods. I only eat those foods just as long as I know their contents or I will not eat them. I wont eat unless I know its safe. What are you thoughts?

It sounds like you are borderline panic disorder, and the things you mention eating are triggering a stress reaction in your body.

Sugar, caffeine, and chocolate all contain compounds that are known to stress out your adrenal glands. When your adrenals are tired, you can succumb to panic attacks. I know…

I suffered from panic attacks for years, and in the beginning it was nervousness, worrying that I would embarrass myself, etc. That escalated to claustrophobia in shower stalls, tunnels & bridges, and worst of all – airplanes. I drank coffee, ate lots of sugary stuff, etc. NO more than other people, but no less.

Then came the full-blown, heart pounding, head spinning, terrified for no reason panic attacks.

I could not figure out what was happening, because when you’re in the panic cycle you don’t get a popup box that says "YOU ARE HAVING A PANIC ATTACK!" You just feel (or I did anyway) like you’re going crazy.

YOU ARE NOT GOING CRAZY.

A psychiatrist friend said something that really made an impact for me. She said, "Nadia, crazy does not have a map! Crazy people are crazy in all situation, not just when they’re driving or in an enclosed space." Or in your case, after drinking coffee or chocolate. (She diagnosed me as having panic disorder.)

Here’s what she suggested I try. It worked for me. It was cheaper than a single visit to a therapist.
I hope it’ll work for you too! They cover diet and relaxation along with almost everything else that can trigger a panic attack.

http://scrnch.me/panicrelief

This is a product called "The Panic Puzzle" which was written by a panic attack sufferer who cured himself. There’s a free report you can get, which I found helpful.

God Bless, and let us know how you do!

"Short-term triggering causes – Significant life changes, emotional trauma from a failed relationship, life transition, stimulants such as nicotine and caffeine, psilocybin, marijuana, and drugs can trigger panic attacks."

What are the usual reasons why somebody would get a panic attack ?

Its complicated.
Basically, it has to do with some sense of underlying anxiety about something.
It usually has nothing to do with what the person is doing when they have a panic attack.
For some reason, anxiety is elevated at a certain place and the person begins to associate that place or those circumstances with their physical reaction.
I think a lot of panic attacks are directly related to anxiety disorder, or what I have been told "anticipatory anxiety."
There is a feeling one has to be perfect. One has to behave in a certain way. One is unsure of their surroundings, perhaps from being overly criticized during their childhood or perhaps just an inherited tendency.
I have suffered with this since my middle teens and I am now over 50. I’ve been through therapy off and on over all those years. I still deal with anxiety issues, but I don’t have the debilitating panic attacks anymore thanks to cognitive therapy. It really works. It takes time and effort, but it continues to work for me.
The last real panic attack I had, I was sitting on the edge of my bed tying my tennis shoes. Why should I have a panic attack about that? I took a deep breath and I said, "Bring it on, you don’t scare me anymore." It vanished, just like that.
As I said, I had a lot of therapy and even had to take some medication for a short period of time (2 months). I still have situations where I have anxiety, but there’s just too much I want to do and I don’t want to be held back from doing them.

I hope I’ve answered your question, likely given given you more info than you asked for.

I know that my panic "spells" are the result of my over-thinking and over-analyzing my thoughts. How do I distract myself or talk myself down when I feel a panic attack coming on? It’s hard to not think about something when you have to keep telling yourself to stop thinking about it…

Four Ways to Get Rid of a Panic Attack

Panic attacks cause people suffering from it to live their lives differently from the way they used to. They have to avoid the triggers, so if a person gets panic attacks whenever being surrounded by people then this person will have to keep avoiding places such as malls, cinemas and supermarkets. Such a predicament is going to be very hard for most of us who have to make sacrifices just so we can avoid a panic attack.

The good news is, there are ways to put an end to panic attacks. But before going any further, we need to understand what this condition is. A panic attack causes the release of adrenaline to the veins sending a message to the adrenal glands about incoming fear or worry, resulting in an adverse reaction from the body. It will then cause extreme reactions in the body which results in a panic attack.

The steps that will help eliminate panic attacks are:

1. Relaxation: You can use breathing techniques to help you relax better. Calm down as soon as you realize you are going to have a panic attack. The more you become tense, the more the attack will become much worse.

2. Use of Affirmations and Positive Statements: Keep telling yourself that you can handle the panic attack and that it will not lead you to any fatal situation. Any strong positive statement is going to alleviate your condition. Tell yourself that everything is going to be all right and it will. For affirmations, you need to constantly remind yourself that you are capable of getting rid of your panic attacks.

3. Acceptance of Emotion: This is one of the most effective ways to eliminate panic attacks. You need to acknowledge your fears and worries, and once you do, you need to look deeper and find out what causes these things to occur. If it is fear of delivering a speech, you need to know why. Is it because there are a hundred people around? If the answer is yes, then ask yourself why you are afraid of them. By having answers to these questions you will be able to find ways to control your fear, and when you can control your fear you can prevent panic attacks.

4. Blocking of Negative Thoughts: You need to rid your mind of negative thoughts because they have the power to rule over you. If you are constantly being pessimistic, then your whole world will become just that- full of problems and complications. You need to be able to say “STOP” whenever negative thoughts start entering your mind.

Listen to what you are feeling inside, trust yourself and keep your thoughts positive. Manage how you react to situations and tell yourself that it is going to be okay. If things have gone from bad to worse, you can always seek therapy through hypnosis and Neuro-Linguistic Programming or NLP to get better treatment for your condition.

Panic attacks are never a good thing because they deprive you of your right to live normally. Do not be resigned to the idea of letting panic attacks control you for the rest of your life because you deserve so much better than a life of isolation and constant fear. Put in mind that these panic attacks can be cured, if you know how and where to go to seek treatment. If you cannot afford seeking professional help, that is alright too because you are surely just as capable of fixing the condition on your own. Be focused and determined, and work really hard at getting rid of panic attacks.

Sit down and take nice slow deep breaths. Inhaling, count one thousand and one.. one thousand and two…. then exhale for the same count. And if you are having them often, I would consider seeing a doctor and try to find out why you are experiencing them so frequently. And you can always go in to the hospital and see someone for help while you are going through the attack.. they can assess you better then to be sure you aren’t experiencing a heart attack. I would also look at the possibility of seeing a counsellor and trying to get to the root issue of your panic attacks. The mind is a powerful thing so you will need to learn how to use it to better heal yourself. If you would like to join a group of people who are learning to heal themselves, you certainly can. Go to http://groups.msn.com/PositivelyWell and tell them little softy sent you when you apply to join the group. We have message boards, online workshops throughout the month, and it is almost like joining a family.. we are very supportive of our members. I hope this helped you some.

When I have panic attacks (which are few) I start crying uncontrollable while having the normal symptoms (trouble breathing, heart racing etc). Does anyone else experience this and is this normal?
is it really a panic attack or something else?

Yes, it is absolutely normal for a lot of people who have panic attacks. Not everyone experiences panic attacks the same.

For instance, when I experience them, I cry, scream, gasp, my heart races, I get dizzy, lightheaded, and my muscles spasm. Oftentimes, my arms and fingers end up twisted into positions you wouldn’t think would be possible. While having a panic attack, if I don’t sit down immediately, I will collapse.

When my father experiences panic attacks, he has trouble breathing, his heart races, and he feels dizzy and lightheaded. But he doesn’t cry, scream or have the muscle spasms. He rarely collapses, although there have been the occasions.

I can’t say whether or not you’re having a panic attack. From what you’ve described, it certainly sounds like one! But I am not a doctor, nor have I seen you physically, so I am not qualified to say yea or nay. I used my father and me as examples because we have both been officially diagnosed with panic attacks (as well as other conditions.) A more accurate assessment could be attained if you mentioned this to your doctor the next time you see him/her. I hope that, whatever it is, you find out what it is and get help. Whether it is a panic attack or not, those feelings are highly distressing.

Often before going on airplanes, I take my sisters panic attack medicine. I could not tell you exactly what it is called though. I am 14 years old and I do take it with an adults supervision. Although I do ride in airplanes often, I am still quite afraid of them. Do you think it is still okay to use it, or should I not use it before going on planes because I am not prescribed it? I don’t need it for anything else, I don’t get random panic attacks or anything.

I would not recommend taking the medication since you were not prescribed it.

I would recommend talking to your doctor about the panic attacks that you have before going on planes to see what they would recommend to help in dealing with this.
