My advice would be to close your eyes and think of things that make you happy. Perhaps consider carrying around something special to you (rabbits foot, loved ones picture, a rock, etc) and take it out when you need strength.

I'll tell you what I do and I've never fully admitted this to anyone.
When I panic in public I tend to look at other people who seem calm and semi "normal". I pretend that I, too, have no anxiety and everything is fine. I also search for animals and children for a guaranteed smile.

Some will say drugs are the answer. For the most I think it's a case of numbing yourself to the outside world again. Small steps, and don't let an attack beat you, even if you collapse in a heap! Just get back up again, nuts to what people think.

Think about how a soldier feels when walking down the street in Iraq.

Then just walking down the High Street doesn't seem so bad after all, does it ?

I also suggest you get yourself a ticket to Glastonbury Festival 2007. The whole stress free experience will chill you out right up until the next one comes around in 2008 !

I suffer from anxiety too. Alot of the time, if notice myself starting to get wound up, I just pause, look at the sky and admire the remoteness of it. You can be in the middle of a busy city centre, surrounded by people shouting, your phone ringing, your panicing about the work you havn't done. . . but if i just stop for a moment, and look up at the sky, watch a cloud roll over another, see the moon gleam or just watch rain drops cascade down onto my face, it calms me down. When I look up it makes me feel so tranquil, I block out all the sounds and bustle and just think about nothing. It only takes me a few seconds, but's thats usually enough.

When I'm in school and I start feeling it building, I sing in my head, anything calming, not necassarily classical music, just something that I can relate to, and feel happy when listening to.

What works for me more than anything, is imagination, mental imagery is brilliant. If I'm stressed, or starting to feel it, I just close my eyes and picture my girlfriend, see her smiling, laughing. . . anything really. Just picture someone you love, remember times of being with them, the happyness you shared.

I hope this helped, atleast a little, I feel for you mate.
    Best of luck to ya.

I know this may seem obvious, but breathing is one of the best techniques to help you keep calm. When you're out somewhere and you feel your anxiety levels rising, go somewhere nearby that's quiet and take deep breaths. Concentrate on your breathing and block everything else around you.

Also, you mentioned that listening to music keeps you relaxed. Maybe when you go out somewhere, take a mp3 player/ipod/cd player with you and listen to music as you walk around. You can breathe in and out while listening to music.

Lastly, you can envision your home as your "safe place" and when you are out and feeling anxious, stop, close your eyes, and picture yourself at home and how you feel when you are there. When you feel as though you've calmed down a bit, you can continue to go about as you were.

    Hope these tips help!

Well the easiest way to get rid of anxiety or any other problem is to chant the maha mantra (The great mantra for deliverance from suffering and misery) One can say it in their mind or out loud the process is the same.-Just chant Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare–go to krishnaculture. for details read Bhagavad Gita as it is By Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada for all answers to questions in life.

Take that calmness with you when you go out by putting some small item in your pocket that means something to you. When I was suffering these symproms I used to carry my child's small fluffy pencil case in my pocket because although it was his and he loved it, he had given it to me one day as a good luck token when I was sitting an exam.

Also, do not breathe too deeply – that will make you dizzy. Just take small light breaths but try and control them by counting them in and out, always out as slowly as you can.

I also like to count backwards or concentrate on my footsteps – yes I know this sounds a bit OCD but anything is better than rising panic!

Finally, never go anywhere without your mp3 player and your phone. I have a self-hypnosis track that I concentrate on when I am feeling panicky and I know that as long as I have my phone, nothing too bad can happen to me.

    Good luck,

give your anxiety a name. when the feeling arises when you're out and about the brain identifies that feeling as anxiety giving it a new name, a silly, comical name can elevate some of the stress of it's unwelcomed arrival. naming it (IE. dickinadress) your self talk now will begin with "oh dam, I'm feeling dickinadressish" the mere words will enable a smile. that brings me to my second tip. smile on purpose. use the muscles to your face to smile, studies show that even when forced this sends signals to the brain to release chemical that improve mood=behaviour. and third is look at others as a gauge to what is "normal", for that moment a bit like, say on an air plane and you get some turbulence, well this is where i get my anxiety and well i will always have my eye on the flight crew, if they're ok, i'm ok. and forth i'm a firm believer in what ever you practise you get good at, so try out the advice that's been posted and give it some time and practise. all the best to you

There is someone who loves you 70 times more than a mother loves her child.
Try to recognise Him, Your ultimate Lord, Allah Almighty.
Anyone who does not remember Allah Almighty, Allah let that one forget his own original Self.
The ignorance of our own self causes anxiety, as our life become aimless. If we lost our incentives and motivation to live, just by seeking fun instead of peace of mind, we get lost.
Fun is meant for being aimless by closing our eyes from reality. Where opposite to it, is the peace of mind that is linked with boldly facing the bitter realities around us.
Facing realities is actually a fuel that lets you to be determined to move forward towards your destinations and goals of life.
Where being aimless means you loose your incentives to live. When our aim is high our inner self gets motivated to achieve it, as it is our in-built quality. So our subconscious becomes active, gives us powers to overcome the difficulties.
By being aimless we loose our all inner energies those are meant for us to survive in life full of tests and experimentation.

He who recognises his own Self, gets recognised his Ultimate Lord.
