How do you know if someone has agoraphobia?

How do you know if someone has agoraphobia? My friend lately hasn’t been wanting to hang out with me outside, he always wants to stay home and do things inside. I invite him places but he never wants to go. He has left school too without even getting his diploma and just stays on the computer all day. It’s been almost a year like this. I am worried about him. Does this mean he has agoraphobia? If so why and how can I help him?

from wikipedia.org
Definition
Agoraphobia is a condition where the sufferer becomes anxious in environments that are unfamiliar or where he or she perceives that they have little control. Triggers for this anxiety may include wide open spaces, crowds, or traveling (even short distances). This anxiety is often compounded by a fear of social embarrassment, as the agoraphobic fears the onset of a panic attack and appearing distraught in public.[1]

It’s been confirmed by my therapist and doctor that i have these and my first appointment with the psychiatrist is tomarrow. Im terrified of whats going to happen! What do psychiatrists do for people with this?

Guess what? Your psychiatrist is your doctor and works for you! He/she is there to help you, not hurt you. They really want to be successful with your care so that you can live happily. This is a communication team effort. You and your doc are going to talk and you are going to answer his questions as best you can. Then together you are going to try some medications, which by the way – you do not have to take for the rest of your life, they are only prescribed to help you feel better than you do now. And, you just keep at it until you find the right meds. If this doc doesn’t make you feel at ease tell them so. Tell them what you think and feel, that is the only way they can help you. Give it a try, and see how you are feeling in a couple of months.

Good luck!

Has anyone tried Similasan Anxiety Relief?

I saw this stuff advertised and was wondering if it really worked. Is it drops or lozengers? I would love to hear from someone who tried in when they were nervous about something.

I haven’t tried it myself, but I’ve heard very good things about it. Similasan has a full listing about it on their website at http://www.similasanusa.com/products-anxiety-relief.cfm
It works similar to Rescue Remedy in the fact it’s a Homeopathic liquid that you dissolve under your tongue and it helps to relieve anxiety… both work really well for that. Good luck and I hope I helped!

Best medications for anxiety and panic disorder?

I was diagnosed with panic disorder a few years ago. I started out on Effexor XR. While it was excellent in keeping the anxiety and panic attacks at bay, the side effects were unbearable. My doctor switched me over to Lexapro, which worked at first, but now does nothing for me. I even started taking 20 mg as opposed to the 10 mg I was prescribed. I have an appointment with my doctor next week and I wanted to get a general idea of the best medications out there.

In my case I tried a few until I found the right one. I take Zoloft and it has been great for me. You have to get through the side effects no matter what you take so remember that. Meds are not a "cure", you have work to do as well. So remember that with the meds and you fighting then you will win over the panic.
Good luck at the Dr.

How to help my girlfriend with her panic attacks?

My girlfriend has panic attacks. Her panic attacks have gotten worse since college started. School work is taking a lot out of her and causing her panic attacks to happen more frequently. I have no background on panic attacks and want to understand them more. I’ve read many things online but i can only learn so much from searching. What should I do? I wanna help my girlfriend.

I think all the help you can give her is to be there for her & have her calm down. She needs to help herself by going to a doctor to get on anti-anxiety pills until she learns to meditate & control her panic attacks on her own. She could try yoga or another form of meditation first though before resorting to pills?

What are some symptoms of a panic attack?

I think I may have had a panic attack the day before yesterday. While in the shower, I became short of breath, felt as if I would pass out, and my heart was pounding. After getting out of the shower, drying, and dressing, I sat for a while (about 20 minutes) until the symptoms went away. Deep breathing helped.

Do you think I may have had a panic attack?

Hi
I’d like to give some solid advice to you about panic attacks. There are many dead ends you can go down tryin to deal with this problem. I have a history of them and now I have dealt with them

When a person has a panic attack they are frozen in fear. This is not cowardice. Panic attacks become a private hidden secret inner prison that destroys a person’s life and self-esteem. A person tries so hard to hide it even from him/herself. Panic attacks come on like a heart attack without a warning. It is a very similar feeling and hard to detect which makes it even scarier. The chest tightens, there is no way to handle the fear factor, the feeling that is paralyzing and comes from out of nowhere. Physical discomfort like a rapid heartbeat, sweating, trembling, hot flashes and trouble swallowing regularly accompany the attacks. Panic attacks usually peak within ten minutes but can last 30 minutes. Sometimes panic attacks can last as long as a day. Many feel very tired and worn out after the attack subsides.

Learning how to stop panic attacks is a priority for the majority of those who have ever experienced them. This is because panic attacks are emotionally, mentally and physically draining. Some have gone so far as to describe panic attacks as emotional nightmares.
Although a doctor is a good port of call first in case there is some health-cause, medications do not always alleviate the panic attacks, especially long term, and those prescribed with anti-psychotic medication are on the road to further problems resulting from the consistent use of chemicals that eventually have a permanent negative effect on the brain.

I am not a doctor or a professional person, but I am a person that lived with panic attacks and have overcome them. I’ve had to read information and misinformation from sources that proscribe to know about panic attacks but they don’t. People give so many varied points of view on how one should deal with them. Persons that have panic attacks not only have to deal with the panic attacks, they have to deal with people who have a lack of understanding and arguments at the same time.

There are now simple techniques you can learn to help you stop panic attacks quickly and easily and eventually cure panic attacks completely. These techniques have been tested and proven through research and actual application to stop panic attack quickly and effectively.

The deep breathing technique (also called diaphragmatic breathing) is a very important technique to learn if you what to quickly know of how to stop a panic attack. The challenge now is when you are experiencing anxiety, focusing on proper deep breathing can be very difficult task. The deep breathing technique requires you to breathe directly from your diaphragm and is the type of deep breathing you do during meditation. This technique is simple and anyone can practice it when you begin to feel the symptoms of panic attack.
I’ve included a link if anybody wants to really get to know more about techniques and how to stop the panic attacks completely and for good. I’ve been there so I wish all those on the search the best, and I offer lots of optimism because this affliction can be overcome.

Good Luck

What Rescue Remedy is good for anxiety attacks?

I have many many anxiety attacks a day and it gets worse day by day and I really dont want to be put on meds. Is there any natural way to go?

Hi, I’m sorry you have to go through this horrible ordeal. I have a terrible history of anxiety attacks. Mine come at times of stress. Before you rush in to looking for a ‘rescue remedy’, we should find out the ‘root’ of your problem so that we can rid of your anxiety forever. What triggered the first attack, do you remember? The best trick to ridding your anxiety is knowing that there is nothing to be afraid of these attack. You will not die. If you tell yourself that you are not scared of the attack, and breathe slowly, don’t fight it, let it pass, than it will get better in time, trust me. You are getting the attack because you are afraid of it and you are trying to fight it.

Don’t fight it, go outside, sit down and take long deep breaths.
There is a special way to breathing. Make sure you are breathing down to your navel and not jus your chest. Breathing to only your chest is what creates anxiety. if you learn patience and meditation, your symptom will go away within a minute or two and you will not get an attack.
Just sit with your head down, close your eyes, breath very slowly, the slower you breathe, the calmer your mind will be. Remember that you are causing these attacks which means you do have the power to stop it. Practice your breathing as often as possible so you are prepared when your symptoms come back.

Whatever you do avoid meds. Do NOT take them. I found that meditation works instantly and there is no side effects, only benefits.

And even if you do rid of the attacks, it is important you continue practice your breathing every single day. I took it for granted I will never get them again but I did and it was horrible. So please practice your breathing everyday so you are always aware and prepared.

Wish you luck!
Email me if any questions.

when i get an anxiety attack i get extremely keyed up and my thoughts are racing and i get twitchy, what is the difference between that and a manic phase?

It sounds like you’re describing the manic phase of bipolar disorder when you say that you "get extremely keyed up and my thoughts are racing and I get twitchy". Bipolar disorder causes extreme mood swings that are divided into two episodes: manic episodes and depressive episodes. During a manic episode, you may feel overly "high" and/or irritable, and during depressive episodes, people tend to feel sad and hopeless. Drastic changes in energy and behavior also accompany these changes in mood.

Anxiety attacks are usually accompanied by physical effects such as heart palpitations, nausea, chest pain, shortness of breath, stomach aches, or headaches. Physically, the body prepares to deal with what it perceives as a threat.

You should seek the advice of a capable physician but it sounds like you are suffering from bipolar disorder

I’m meeting up with this cute and VERY nice guy next week, and i have only been texting. and seems we’ve gotten so used to texting that now im extremely nervous about meeting up with him.
i had a panic attack yesterday just when he brought it up. it makes me feel terrible, because i really like him. and he does too. i want to meet him. but i just dont know why im so nervous! i cant get over this!

any advice?

Nervous is good – if you show up all cool like "yea, whatever".. he’ll think you don’t care. Just be yourself and know that one of two things are gonna happen. Either you will like each other and the nerves will turn to excitement, or you won’t like each other and your nerves will go away cuz you can’t wait for the date to be over.

Either way, there is nothing wrong with saying to him "I’m a little nervous".. and he’ll probably say "yea, I’m a little nervous too!"

Good Luck!
