You have an upset stomach; you take antacids to rid you of the pain. You have a headache; you take ibuprofen or aspirin to control the pain. Your heart is racing as you finished your aerobic exercise. You feel short of breath after climbing up 10 flights of stairs. You feel tingly and nervous and sweaty – are you in love? The thing is, any of these symptoms could mean anything. However, put them all together and throw in sensations of intense fear and doom, then there’s a possibility that you are experiencing a panic attack. If such is the case, the first thing you would want to do is find out how to get rid of panic attacks.

There is psychotherapy, medications, and some experts say, a change in lifestyle. These options work but what if the panic attack is actually happening?  Is there anything you can do? Here are some of the things that you can do that will help you get rid of panic attacks:

Get Active

If you’re one big coach potato, do something about it. Get active! Do some exercises or any type of sports to get you on a different kind of adrenalin pattern.  A bout of a panic attack makes your heart palpitate and blood rush in your head. An attack is all about a release of adrenalin for a “fight or flight” mode. A panic attack is a physiological thing at the onset. Exercising could actually “burn” the excess adrenalin. So once it hits, go for a focused quick walk, jump in place, wiggle jiggle – whatever it is you do, burn energy!

Take a Breath

Hyperventilating is taking short-shallow breaths. At the onset of a panic attack, you hyperventilate and gasp. Not good. You have to remember to take slow deep breaths. Expand your chest. Breathe using your diaphragm – just like the way singers do it. Breathe in and out real slow. When done properly, being aware of and controlling your breath can help you get rid of panic attacks.

Get a Massage

The attacks tense up your muscles especially in the neck, throat, shoulders and diaphragm areas. The added stress from your tensed-up muscles will add more pressure on you. If you can, massage the affected areas to ease up on tension. If there’s someone with you, let him or her massage the back of your neck one side at a time. Remember to take deep slow breaths.

Stay Put and dare the attack

During a panic attack your body switches to the “flight or fight” mode, well, don’t! That is, don’t punch anyone within arm’s-length (kidding!)  and don’t run as if hell hounds are after you. The best thing to do is for you to stay put and get a hold of yourself. Running from the place where the attack takes place will only worsen things. Remind yourself that no matter what, the attack will not harm you. And if you can dare and ‘tell’ the attack “Come on, I am not afraid of you,” you will be surprised to find out that you have just managed to stop the attack in its tracks. How?  By depriving it from its most important ingredient – fear!

If the attacks occur on a fairly regular basis, make sure you see a qualified doctor for a more comprehensive evaluation and diagnosis to reinforce and validate your knowledge on how to get rid of panic attacks. You may also want to check out different options such as PanicAway or the Linden Method for help.

So you want to know how to control panic attacks?

I understand – in fact, I used to be in your place for many years and I too was eager to know the answer.

But first, let me ask you this: Would you say that what you fear most is having another attack?

If so, I have a secret I want to share with you…

Did you know that most panic attack sufferers are not aware of the fact that what they fear most, and practically obsessed with, is the next attack?

We, with this condition, always live on the edge, having mild anxiety attacks here in there, but we always live with the anticipation of that next major attack.

Isn’t it true?

So what is that secret? The secret is…

To learn how to control panic attacks by not being afraid of them!

It may sound simple and it is! But it is also immensely powerful – in fact all anxiety disorder experts agree that the single thing that fuels and reinforces the attacks is our conditioned fear of them. And the more we fear them the stronger the control, the stronger the grip, they have over us.

So what can you do about it?

1) Start an inner monologue by declaring a war against your condition. Here is an example: Address the attacks by saying out loud: “You are a fake. You do not scare me and you no longer have any power over me.”

2) Engage the fear by being provocative; challenge it by actually ‘inviting’ a panic attack to come “right now”, but this time on your own terms. Here is an example: “Let’s see how brave you are now. I dare you to attack me right here and right now. Go ahead – show me what you can do.”

You know what? It will never happen!

And you know what else? You have just won half of the war, bravo!

Warning: Exercising the above is key to cure panic attacks – do not neglect it!

Right now you may not be sure how to win the second half of the war. But soon you will!

So you want to know how stop panic attacks way before they manifest?
I understand how you feel – in fact I have spent years trying to control my anxiety attacks – so I know what you are going through.
Today I have a secret to share with you that will help you eliminate intrusive thoughts that can, otherwise, hamper your better judgment and thus set the stage for the next panic episode.
Get this – almost 90% of those who suffer from panic attacks don’t know the number one reason why their attacks re-occur.
If you are one of the statistics, then soon you wouldn’t be.
But first, let me ask you this: Have you ever been scared of having an attack before you ever had your first one?
If you are like the rest of us, your answer should be a resounding “No” or, as most answer emphatically – “Never!”
So what is this secret? It is this…
Fear of the next attack. Yes, fearing the next attack = anticipating it = a full blown panic attack.

Think back and ask yourself this:  what had brought on the second attack? Wasn’t it the fear of having one?
As you probably know – during an attack all brain activity shifts to the mid-brain, an area of the brain that is not only home to the fight or flight response, but also a part of the brain that is incapable of reasoning.
That is why we are not capable to apply reason and stop the attack while in progress.
But you can do is use reasoning before way before an attacks begins – like right now.
Here is what you can do:
1)    Acknowledge and face your fear
2)    Make a commitment to never again fear a future panic attack
3)    Monitor your thoughts  and be on the lookout for intrusive thoughts

Warning:  Do not underestimate the above.
Once accomplished, you will amazed by the dramatic reduction of your anxiety level.

ok well im still not sure if this is actually what is happening to me but im starting to think it might be….. anyways it seems that i may be occasionally suffering from panic attacks… mine seem to happen for no apparent reason…. but anyways my question is how do you stop them…. im guessing that breathing in and out slowly and stuff like that helps but is there anything else….. any help would be appreciated…. thank you

Panic attacks are not something to be taken lightly, and they DON’T go away when you say "Stop!" That’s the dumbest advice I ever heard. You need to see a doctor about it. I attempted suicide because my panic was so severe.

People who have not been through true panic should not be giving advice. I’m on one milligram of Klonopin a day and I feel normal again.

Good luck. Don’t pay attention to the idiots who think it’s "all in your head." That’s pure bullshit.

Posted: agoraphobia

The cities in China are very populated and crowded. So I wondered if Agoraphobia is heard of over there. If anyone knows if it is a problem like in the Western Countries.

TKS might be a good term to look up. It is a psychological term used in Japan that generalises type of psychological syndromes where people becomes phobic to crowd or people.

According to some statistics (sorry, couldn’t find a link…), the relative population of people suffering from TKS is extremely high in East Asia compared to most of the Western countries for teenagers and early 20’s.

Such social background led to invetion of a terminology such as TKS, which you hardly hear in Western countries, but is almost a general knowledge in Japan.

I’m scared to take drugs for my anxiety problem as my doctor recommends. Has anyone found anxiety relief without drugs such as a herbal remedy or vitamin perhaps? thank you.

Dear Mark: Yes I have. I had the same problem with taking prescription drugs for my own anxiety. I now use a natural supplement blend called Panicyl that works well for me. I also have read a couple of books by Claire Weeks about anxiety that really helped me understand why i suffer from this crap./ I hope this helps.

What situations make you really panic, or get edgy in? What fuels you disorder? I have Anxiety Disorder and I’m just curious. Mine is driving on freeways and confined spaces.

For me it’s being around other people in a situation I cannot control or escape from easily. So planes, trains, boats and most public transport is out for me. I am edgy in cinemas, lecture theatres as well. I also feel uneasy in cars if the driver doesn’t know about or understand my panic disorder. Silence, darkness and strange places also affect me.
Lol. Not a lot of fun. Bless

Is there any herbal remedies for panic attacks?

View the techniques for control of panic attacks, in section 8, in my website, at ezy build, below, which I created to contain all the information that there isn’t enough space for, here. Begin, on this first occasion, only, by holding your breath for 5, or 10 seconds: this will give you the confidence to realise that YOU CAN CONTROL YOUR BREATHING, but not pass out, or die (your autonomic nervous system resumes breathing, if you become unconscious). Understand panic attacks, and what triggers them, in your life (if it is unresolved anxiety, or stress, see sections 6, or 42, respectively). The paper bag method works for most people: try it.

If you are fairly suggestible, the following are reliable: http://www.hypnosisdownloads.com/
Your last alternative is psychotherapy, to address its fundamental cause: read section 1, and examine the http://1-800-therapist.com/ website, and use the locators, and phone book. I used to suffer from panic attacks, until I questioned what had changed in my life, at, or just before that time, to trigger them. For some people, this is enough. These days, I have instilled the habit of, whenever a situation occurs where panic is likely, I visualise a large, "STOP!" sign, as vividly as possible, followed by repeating to myself: "stay calm" in my mind. You could try the same method. It usually takes 30 – 40 repetitions, for most people, to establish a new habit. I also suggest that you learn, then practise the controlled breathing technique, until competent, then employ it, at the very first sign of a panic attack.

Practice one of the relaxation methods on pages 2, 11, 2c, or 2i, daily, and when needed. Also, give the EFT a good tryout, to see if it helps you. There is also a version for use in public places, (if you like, you can claim to have a headache, as you massage/lightly tap your temples, but you would then be restricted to subvocalising: saying it to yourself in your mind). Section 53, and pages 2, 2.q and 2.o at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris also refer: "Even though I sometimes suffer from panic attacks, I deeply and completely accept myself." Note: the controlled breathing only helps with the symptoms (as do medications/herbal remedies): you need to address the underlying cause, and this requires some form of therapy, and Cognitive Behavio(u)ral Therapy has proved effective.

Advice from a published psychiatrist on controlled breathing. (1.) Get a clock, or watch with a second timer. (2.) Practise for 5 minutes, 4 times daily, until proficient. (3.) Take a small breath in, and hold it, for 6 seconds. (4.) Think to yourself: "RELAX", just before breathing out. (5.) Try to feel a sense of releasing tension, as you breathe out. (6.) Breathe in for 3 seconds, then out, for 3 seconds. Try to make your breathing very smooth, and light, as you breathe in through your nose, and out through your mouth, or nose. (7.) For the next minute, continue to breathe in, and out, every 3 seconds. (8.) Go back to step 3, at the end of the minute, and proceed through to step 7, doing this for 5 minutes. Use this at the very first sign of a panic attack starting, or any time you feel anxious, or tense.

Because many people can’t access/afford professional therapy, I include the EFT, and EMDR variant for them to try, free of charge. Cognitive Behavio(u)ral Therapy is generally available in most areas, but EMDR (see section 33) may well be worth trying, and is becoming more widespread. (The following is a variant of EMDR therapy, which has been used successfully for those people suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, insomnia, and anxiety: it is easily learned, quick to use, yet can be very effective. It is currently the subject of much study by neuroscientists, to discover how it works. Don’t dismiss it, merely because it seems a little strange: give it a tryout!). Prior to using either of the methods in the above paragraph, or using it on its own, first sit comfortably, and take a deep breath.

Then, without moving your head, move your eyes from the left, to the right, and back again, taking around a second to do so (say: a thousand and one: this takes approximately a second). Repeat this procedure (without the words, although you can count, subvocally if you like) 20 times. Then close your eyes and relax. Become aware of any tension or discomfort you feel. Then open your eyes, and take another deep breath, and repeat step one, closing your eyes, and relaxing afterwards, in the same manner. Then, repeat the procedure one last time. Some people may find that this is all they need do. With experience, you may find that you can practise this in public, with your eyes closed, which greatly widens the window of opportunity for its use, and avoids attracting unwanted attention. Try having a cup of "Tension Tamer", herbal tea, by Celestial Seasonings, (from supermarket tea, or health food aisles) or make some at home, and cool, then bottle, and drink as needed (I find it so strong tasting, that I need to drink it quickly, followed by something like fruit juice, to take away the taste, but others may find it more tolerable). C(h)amomile tea is a more palatable option. As with all herbal/green teas, use lemon/lime, and/or a little sweetener (NOT ARTIFICIAL!!!) but no cream, or milk.

Xylitol, or Stevia is preferable, (health food stores) or fruit sugar (fructose, such as "Fruisana", from supermarket sugar aisles) or even a little honey.

Panic attack?

So i have suffered from anxiety for about 2 years. Mostly panic attacks every now and then, but mostly anxiety that I am going to have another panic attack. I have been on Celexa for about a year and everything is fine. I am slowly challenging myself to do things I reframed before I begain taking that anti-dep. Now I have gained weight, have no sexually appt., and basically just dont want to have to take these danm pills all my life.

the problem is, whenever I try to go off of the, the anixety comes back. Anyone out these experience this, and if so, how do I over come it. Thank you very much!!

What is it that you’re afraid of? Whatever it is attack it, until you do fear will have control of you. But when you have the courage to face the fear, you’ll find the fear quickly disappears. Courage always wins over fear.

There is no basis for 92% of the things we worry about. That’s from Earl Nigthingale’s Lead the Field. I don’t remember the break-down of the 92% but the biggest one was worrying about things that never happened. As Mark Twain said "I’ve had a lot of worries in my life, most of which never happened."

As far as getting of the medication, that’s a good idea because you don’t need it. You can beat this on your own. Use the power of your sub-conscious mind…it’s absolutely amazing. I suggest a book I recently read by Dr. Joseph Murhpy titled "The Power of Your Subconscious Mind"

the thing about it though is that you really have to believe that you can overcome your anxiety without medication. Henry Ford said "Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t, you’re right." He understood the amazing power of the mind. How else can you explain a man with a 5th grade education building the largest automobile company of all time? He truly believed he could and didn’t listen to all the morons who told him he couldn’t. He thought he could and he did. And so can you.
Good luck. http://www.stoppanicattack.com

I need help. I have mass tomorrow in school and I always get these anxiety attacks where i feel faint. I’m terrified of passing out or something like that. I’ve been tested and they can’t find anything physically wrong. But what can i do to help with the anxiety?

That is called a panic attack. The person who has one is often fearful of placing themselves in events where it might happen again. Medication would definitely help you; I don’t know who’s been testing you but if it was a doctor, go see a different one who knows what they are doing.

Therapy might also be beneficial, but if you don’t get your brain chemistry under control you can’t begin to work on your cognitive maladaptions.
